Bloomer and Thomas from Macomb dominate Pool 13

On August 6th the IBN High School Series went to Pool 13 out of Savanna Illinois. Water levels on the Mississippi River had been a little high but over the week just before the tournament the water levels were dropped over 3 feet. This would definitely have an effect on the positioning of the fish on the river.

All of the teams were in the water and ready to go and takeoff began at 6:00 am. The weather cooperated with slightly overcast skies with no rain forecasted.

When the teams came in you could tell that fishing was tough for most of the field. Word was that only a few limits were coming to the scale.

Half way through the weigh in the Durand Bulldogs, Joey Erickson and Robert Oakley, held the hot seats with a limit of fish weighing 9.26 lbs. Then, Macomb High Schools, Wally Bloomer and Charles Thomas came to the scale with a solid bag. Their 5 fish limit of 13.19 lbs. which included a Big Bass at 2.79 was more than enough to take over the hot seats. With only a few teams left to weigh in they seemed to be confident with their weight. The last team to weigh in were brothers Nolan and Colen Turner, Turner Home School, and they had a limit of fish. As the scale stopped at 8.21 lbs. giving the Turners the third place spot, Wally and Charles held on to the top honors for the event.

Charles and Wally 1st Place

The Pool 13 event also established 5 more Teams that have now qualified for the IBN High School Series State Championship next June. The 5 teams qualifying at this event are;

1. Joey Erickson and Robert Oakley Durand Bulldogs

2. Nolan Turner and Colen Turner Turner Home School

3. Sean Cook and Tommy Zobel Joliet Central

4. Trace Bogner and TBD Midland H S

5. Kolt Lawyer and TBD Macomb H S

Wally and Charles already qualified for their spot at the Jacksonville event. Congratulations to all the qualifying teams. For more information about the IBN High School Series visit us on Facebook or go to www.illinoisbassnation.com or www.bassmaster.com .

Sandwich High School on top at Jacksonville

On July 16th the second tournament of the 2016 – 2017 IBN High School Series took place.

Lake Jacksonville is one of the new locations for the series and knowing the recent history of the lake for big fish we were all looking forward to a good tournament.

The takeoff began at 6:30 as the anglers made their way to their first spot with high expectations. Jacksonville has been known to produce some really big bass and I was hoping to get a chance to weigh in a good one.

It was about 45 minutes before the anglers needed to return and the Team of Chris Thompson and Matt Reimer came in and asked to weigh in early. They had a limit of fish and some of them were not doing so good in their live well. As I watched them bring up their limit they either had a good bag of fish or too much water for them to carry. First they said they had a good fish for big bass and it certainly was. The fish toped the scale at 5.99 lbs. Then the five fish limit weighed in at 13.57 lbs. They released the fish and all of them were fine. It is great to see a team concerned about fish care like they were.

As the rest of the anglers returned for the weigh in we heard there were several more limits and a couple of big bass coming in as well. As the Sandwich Team took the hot seats the weigh in started.

Team after team came up and tried to bump them out but no luck. The Macomb High School team of Walley Bloomer and Chuck Thompson was next to weigh in. They had 4 fish but they were good ones. The teams big bass weigh in at 5.29 lbs. and without that 5th fish they had a total weight of 11.83 lbs.

The last team to try and take the hot seats were Austin Bickel and Nate Bickel from Midland High School. There big bass weighed in at 3.32 lbs and their limit was 11.21 lbs. The weigh in was over and Chris Thompson and Matt Reimer from Sandwich became the event champions. Congratulations for a job well done.

Along with the top 3, the 4th and 5th place teams also qualified for the IBN State Championship next June and they were, 4th Place Wyatt Colvin and Isabelle Colvin from Midland High School and 5th Place, Drew Herrmman and Wyatt Gabby from Marion High School. Congratulations to all 5 qualifying teams.

The next IBN High School Series event will be on Pool 13, out of Savanna Illinois, Savanna City Marina launch on August 6th. For more information on the IBN High School Series visit our facebook page, www.illinoisbassnation.com

Minooka High School takes IBN High School Series Season Opener

The IBN High School Series held its first event of the 2016 – 2017 season at Clinton Lake on June 25th. The high School anglers were very excited about the new season and the possibility of making the top 5 at this event.

The top 5 teams from each of the events will get a birth at the IBN High School State Championship that will be held in June 2017. From there they can qualify for the Bassmaster High School Championship to compete for college scholarships and prizes.

Clinton has been producing some great fish this year and we all anticipated it would continue. As the anglers took off for the day the temps were forecasted to be in the low 90’s. High temps and bluebird skies could make fishing tough. Most of the anglers were hoping for an early morning bite to get the day started.

As they came in we heard there were several limits coming up to the scale. The first team to sit in the hot seats were Hunter Litchfield and Lawson John from Macomb High School with a limit that was 11.12 lbs. with a Big Bass at 4.85 lbs. Hunter and Lawson got comfortable for a while as the teams came up trying to bump them off. Then A J Wojtowicz and Brent Beckwith from Minooka High School came up with a limit that weighed 13.66 lbs. and took over the hot seats. At this point there was only a few teams to weigh in and we heard the last team had a good bag. Nathan Doty and Jake Oakfeaf from Sangamon Valley, the last team to weigh in, came up with a solid limit. The scale stopped at 13.29 lbs. locking up second place and AJ and Brent held on to the top spot.

Coagulations to Brent and AJ for a great win and to all five teams that qualified for the 2017 IBN State Championship. The top 5 teams are:

Minooka H S A J Wojtowicz and Brent Beckwith 13.66 lbs.
Sangamon Valley H S Nathan Doty and Jake Oakfeaf 13.29 lbs.
Macomb H S Hunter Litchfield and Lawson John 11.12 lbs. Big Bass at 4.85 lbs.
Midland H S Doni Anderle and Logan Wunder 10.55 lbs.
Plainfield So. H S Mike Bobich and Jake Blomquist 9.83

The next event will be at Lake Jacksonville just west of Springfield on July 16th .

A J Wojtowicz and Brent Beckwith were the final Minooka team to hold the hot seats and win the event with a 5 fish limit that weighed 8.67 lbs and a Big Bass for the event at 2.18 lbs. Congratulations to A. J. and Brent on their win!!

High School Series Opener

On Saturday March 28th the IBN High School Series kicked off the season for 2015 at Lake Springfield. The weather did not cooperate very well and the temps were in the upper 20’s at take-off. By the time the anglers were returning to the ramp it was still cold and windy.

As the anglers came to the scales with their fish they heard that Blake Fuller and Christian Allmon from Moline High School were the only ones with 4 fish. Some of them were not worried because 3 teams each had a big bass close to 4 lbs.

The hot seats changed owners several times during the weigh in. After bringing 8.85 Lbs. to the scale and a big bass of 3.85 Lbs. Joliet Central’s Sean Cook and Tom Zobel had the seats with 2 teams to weigh in. Sam Milazzo and Nick Martins from Maine South stepped up with a Big Bass of 3.98 Lbs. and a total weight of 7.95 which, for the time being, gave them the second place spot. With one team left to weigh in, Fuller and Allmon from Moline with 4 fish, it looked like the hot seat owners would be changing again. When the scale stopped Moline had 8.30 Lbs. and took over the second place spot putting Joliet Central’s Cook and Zobal in the winner’s circle.

Congratulations to Sean and Tom from Joliet Central and all of the teams that qualified for the IBN High School State Championship this coming June.

Oak Lawn H.S. Tournament / Unique Bassmasters

On October 4th the Oak Lawn Community High School held its annual fall tournament on the Kankakee / DesPlaines rivers. For the past 5 years Oak Lawn High School, Unique Bassmasters, Rayjus and the IBN have joined forces to put this tournament on. Coach Chris Kuchyt, from Oak Lawn H.S., spends a lot of time each year putting this all together. Rayjus jumps in as the event sponsor and supplies some great tackle packs for the anglers and Unique Bassmasters runs the event. We take care of the weigh in and have a great time with all the anglers in the process.

This year was another great tournament and to add a little twist the IBN will take the top 5 registered teams to our High School State Championship next June at Lake Springfield.

The day started off on the cold side and then just got worse. The wind was blowing out of the west at 20 MPH with gusts to 30. This was one of those days when you can see white caps on the Kankakee River. The weather did not discourage the anglers as 31 boats participated in the tournament.

When the weigh in was over Joliet Central was on top. Sean Cook, who fished alone because his partner could not make it, took the top honors with 4 fish weighing in at 6.81 lbs. In 2nd Place were Oak Lawns John Neubauer and Andy Jenson with one fish at 2.39 lbs which also took Big Bass for the event. 3rd Place was Lemont H.S., Luke Jasper and Tom Rimbo. In 4th Place, from Minooka H.S., Canyon Kenny and Luke Brozovich and in 5th were Bryson Evens and Collin Griffin from Seneca H.S.

The IBN wants to congratulate all of the anglers for a job well done. Especially Oak Lawns John Neubauer and Andy Jenson, Minooka H.S., Canyon Kenny and Luke Brozovich and Bryson Evens and Collin Griffin from Seneca H.S. These 3 teams have also qualified to participate in the IBN High School Championship next June. Joliet Central and Lemont H.S. had already qualified for the IBN H.S. Championship next year at a previous event.

Stagg’s Cutrone and Vella dominate at Shabbona

The last high school tournament for 2014 was held on Lake Shabbona on September 7th. This was the third qualifying tournament for the 2014 – 2015 season. The teams competing were battling for a spot in the IBN High School Championship next June at Lake Springfield.

It was a tough day for most of the field. A cold front just went through and it was a blue bird day. When the boats began to come in it was looking like we would have a short weigh-in. The first five boats had no fish. Then the next six in a row requested a bag to weigh in fish.

As the weigh in progressed Henry Moore and John VanDevender, from Benet High School, just took over the hot seats with 6.03 lbs. from Davis Hianik from Glenbrook South and Chris Iodice from Oak Forest. Now one team was left to weigh in as Stagg High School’s Joe Vella and Nick Cutrone came to the scale. They said they had one for Big Bass and that was an understatement. The fish topped out at 6.35 lbs. With that one fish they took over the hot seats and first place for the tournament with a total weight of 10.01lbs.

Along with the top 3 teams, Marmion Academy’s Steve Callahan and Daniel Lin and Marion Academy’s Joe Schafer and Dennis Hayes also qualified for the 2015 IBN High School Championship at this event.

IBN High School Series hits the Cal Sag

The schedule was set to have the first IBN High School tournament at Pool 13 on July 19th. After all of the rain that fell at Pool 13 and sent the river 15 feet over flood stage the IBN relocated the tournament to the Cal Sag out of the Alsip launch. "We were concerned with the high water levels and all of the debris that would be pushed out into the Mississippi at Pool 13 and felt it would not be safe there for the anglers."

The change of location did not seem to affect the Sandwich High School team of Logan Beatty and Michael Dobbs. The team won the first IBN High School Series tournament for the 2014 - 2015 season. They now have qualified for the 2015 IBN High School State Championship.

Along with 1st Place - Sandwich High School - Logan Beatty and Michael Dobbs other teams that qualified for the 2015 IBN High School Championship are:

2nd Place - Sandwich High School - T.J. Osterko and Chris Thompson

3rd Place - Preston Turner and Nolan Turner from Rochelle

4th Place - Luke Jasper and Tom Rimbo with Lemont High School.

The IBN would like to thank the IDNR for the quick turn around on permits and the city of Alsip for working with us to get use of their city launch on such short notice. Special thanks to the Alsip Police department and all of the ramp employees for all there help with the event.

On March 24th the Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation hosted a High School Bass Fishing tournament. This was the first tournament is a series across the state for High School bass fishing teams to compete.

The winning team was Leland Shinn and Colten Schultz from Newton High School. Their winning weight was 5.18 lbs. The team also took Big Bass at 3.24 lb.

Leland and Colten will now be invited to compete in the IBN Jr. Bassmaster State Qualifier Championship at Lake Springfield in June. The top two anglers at the Championship will then compete in August, as a part of the IBN State Divisional Team at Francis Case Reservoir in South Dakota at the B.A.S.S. Congratulations to Leland and Colten for a great job done.

The next High School Tournnemant is set for Clinton Lake on April 21st. For more info about the IBN High School Tournament Series go to the High School Information Section.

2013 Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation High School Tournament Series

This year the IBN is sending 2 Jr. Bassmasters to fish as co-anglers with the IBN state team competing in the B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Divisional Tournament. They will be fishing alongside one of the best 12 adult anglers in the state. The Jr. Bassmasters will be competing for the opportunity to go to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. At this event they can win a fully loaded Triton Bass boat along with college scholarships. (For the adult anglers it is the first step to the super bowl of fishing, The Bassmaster Classic.)

This year we are inviting the winners of each of the 6 high school tournaments to compete at our Jr. Bassmaster State Qualifier for the chance to compete with our State Divisional team. The top 2 places from our State Qualifier tournament will receive an expense paid trip to the B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Divisional for themselves and their family. This year the Northern Divisional will be held on Francis Case Resev. in South Dakota.

There will be 6 high school tournaments this year Click Here for Tournament Dates

Your team can compete in as many as you would like. This year, being a transition year, the first 3 tournament winners will compete at this year’s 2013 State Qualifier and the winners of the last 3 events will compete in the 2014 State Qualifier.

The IBN will provide trophies for the first, second and third place teams at each event and a trophy for the school to display proudly. Not to mention the opportunity to compete in our State Qualifier and the chance to go to the B.A.S.S. Northern Divisional expenses paid and then on to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

The cost to enter a tournament is $40.00 per boat (2 anglers per boat) and this includes membership for the anglers in the IBN Jr. Bassmasters and an affiliation with our organization for your school team. As members they will have full access to our IBN Jr. Bassmaster web site. As IBN and B.A.S.S. Members they will be entitled to:

  • IBN Jr. Members Message Board access
  • The IBN State Qualifier (Road to the Bassmaster Classic)
  • B.A.S.S. Nation $1,000,000.00 Umbrella Insurance Policy
  • BASS TIMES magazine / BASS Insider
  • High School Tournament Series (discounted rate per boat)
  • National Sponsor and State Sponsor discounts

B.A.S.S. and the IBN are working together to put together the best events possible for the high school fishing teams in our state. Just fill out the attached form and send it in along with a check for the entry and your team will be set to compete!!! There is no limit to the number of boats that you want to send to the tournaments.

We have been running high school tournaments in Northern Illinois for a few years now and the participation levels are growing fast. Last fall we hosted an event that drew close to 40 boats on the Kankakee / DesPlaines River. It was a great event!!!

This season we are going to include the high school teams in our Jr. Bassmaster program and a shot at a spot in the IBN State Qualifier.
